Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What do co-authoring and/or ghostwriting services involve?

• Consulting with the author on his or her idea or concept for the book project. In some cases, the author may already have  the beginning of a manuscript, or a rough outline of what the book idea may contain.

• Preparation of an outline or table of contents for the book.

• Interview time with the author to obtain additional information to write the manuscript.

• Regular communication with the author via phone or email to review the manuscript as it is being written.

• Proofreading and preparation of final manuscript for publisher.

• Optional Services - Consultation and liaison with publisher to proofread galleys; consultation on book cover design, website, marketing, etc.

FYI: A writer is referred to as co-author when he or she is named on the book cover via a "with" credit, or an "and" credit. A ghostwriter is not named but is usually recognized by the author in the Acknowledgments section of the book.

What do editing services involve?

• Editing of an existing document, manuscript, or website.

• Light editing includes review of text for punctuation, grammar, and spelling errors.

• Heavier editing includes rewriting sections of text to improve transition, flow, and overall communication of ideas. Additions, deletions, or changes to the manuscript may also be suggested.

How do I charge?

Now you have seen examples of past word journeys I have taken — past projects that have allowed me to tell many kinds of stories for many varied purposes.

You may have a word journey you'd like me to embark upon with you, but are wondering, "How does she charge?" and "How much will my project cost?" The answers to those questions are not always as cut-and-dried as the price of retail goods or even some services. What you are purchasing from me is my time, my creativity, and my ability to help you communicate your ideas in a way that will resonate with your readers, your clients/customers, or whomever your audience may be.

I charge in one of two ways:

• Hourly

• By the Project

When we discuss your project, I will determine whether charging an hourly fee or a project fee (usually an estimate of charges with a "not to exceed" amount) will work best for your individual situation. While I may not always be able to give you a definite cost estimate, after I learn more about your project, I will have a better idea of the scope of your word journey.

Example: You have written a book and would like to have it edited. You email me a sample chapter for review. We discuss the extent of editing which may be needed.

Example: You would like to start sending an ezine to your clients on a regular basis. We discuss who will be providing the content (you, me, or a collaborative effort), graphics, and other elements required to complete the e-newsletter. The same would apply for a print version of a newsletter.

Example: You have an existing brochure you would like to be updated. You provide me with a copy of it and we discuss the updates and changes you would like to make.

Example: You do not have a brochure but would like to have one to describe the services or products your business offers. We discuss the important elements to include and you give me the raw data. I write a draft for your review.

Example: You are ready to launch a new business or new service for your existing business. Marketing materials are needed —  a press kit, press releases, etc. We would discuss your needs and map out a journey to make your business or service a destination in demand.

Example: You are having a website designed but the designer is not equipped to write the text, or the existing text could be improved upon. I would review your site or discuss content for your new site and write or re-write it so it is compelling, concise, and creative.

(Note: I designed this website, and may be able to help you with your website's design, as well as writing its content.)
